December 8, 2015 – Lewis Contractors’ Mount Vernon Place Conservancy Washington Monument restoration team raised the lights that were lit at this year’s annual monument lighting celebration.
The 44th Annual Downtown Partnership Monument Lighting took place this year on Thursday, December 3rd and featured more than 16,000 lights on the recently restored Washington Monument.
For the first time in five years, the Monument is open to the public following an eighteen-month, award-wining restoration of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy Washington Monument by Lewis Contractors. Visitors now have the opportunity to climb the 227 steps to the top of the monument and observe the completely renovated museum space located at the monument’s base.
Work involved the restoration the monument’s interior and exterior finishes, and included new digital exhibits as well as special infrastructure so that the holiday Monument Lights can be installed without damaging this historic structure. Restorations were completed in July of 2015 in time to celebrate the monument’s bicentennial anniversary.
