August 20, 2014 – Boy Scout Troop 225 of the Dulaney District Baltimore Area Council toured the ongoing renovations at Baltimore’s Washington Monument during a weekend ceremony.
The group of 13 boys ranging in age from 10-17 years old were given what was termed “a once in a lifetime opportunity” to scale the scaffolding being used in the restoration of the nearly 200 year-old monument. The experience was tied with the qualification process for the Scouts’ Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge which requires a visit to a site listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This unique opportunity for the Scouts was granted by the troop’s Assistant Scout Master, Brian Washburn, Sr., who happens to be the Lewis Contractors Project Manager for the $5M restoration project.
“This was a great opportunity for our troop to experience first-hand, the significance of historic preservation,” said Brian Washburn, Sr. “This was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity—the next time the monument will have scaffolding to climb may not be for another 200 years.”
The visit involved a tour of the monument’s interior and exterior, demonstrations by crews to explain various unique restoration processes, and even a trek to the top of the scaffolding to get a first-hand look at the statue of George Washington. As part of their visit, the first crew of scouts to climb to the top raised an American flag that was donated to the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy.
As the restoration continues to press on, scaffolding is set to be taken down by the end of October and project completion is still set for prior to the monument’s bicentennial anniversary on July 4, 2015.
