Lewis Completes Earthquake Damage Repair of the Basilica

Owings Mills, MD – Lewis Contractors announced the successful completion and return of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – America’s First Cathedral – to the Basilica Historic Trust in time for Holy Week 2013.

“We are pleased to have been a part of another successful campaign to preserve America’s First Cathedral,” said Tyler Tate, vice president of Lewis Contractors. “We cherish our relationship with the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Basilica Historic Trust, and we are honored to have their confidence in our ability to respond effectively in their time of need.”

In August 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake damaged the historic structure built originally from 1806–1821. Lewis Contractors was contracted to repair the numerous cracks that appeared in the Basilica’s main dome, saucer domes and barrel vaults. The repair campaign began in June, 2012. The original Lewis management team that led the restoration of the Basilica from 2001–2006 was called upon once again to complete the earthquake repairs.  The team successfully completed the repairs inside the church while keeping all weekday masses, adoration and church tours operational in the Basilica undercroft during the week and weekend masses available in the main church.
