November 9, 2018 – Established in 1989 by the Associated Builders and Contractors’ National Environment, Health & Safety Committee, the Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program was developed and written by contractors for contractors. For decades, ABC has researched and studied how to improve jobsite safety with STEP, and the data gathered through this program helps provide tools for STEP participants to become more proactive in eliminating injury and hazardous scenarios. Currently, STEP participants are performing 130% safer than the industry average with Platinum Level companies performing 400% higher and Diamond Level companies performing 670% higher than the industry average.
Lewis Contractors has always prided itself on setting a standard in safety with their employees and continues to practice and promote safe practices that have allowed the company to achieve Diamond and Platinum Level awards in the ABC STEP program year after year. At this year’s Safety Awards program, Lewis was honored as one of the safest contractors in the region with the STEP Diamond award—the program’s highest level of recognition. The Diamond level recognition makes up only 13% of the STEP program participants who have achieved a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIT) of 50% and below, and Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.7 and below (Stronghold EMR = .55 ).
The company-wide commitment to safety is reflected in a full-time Safety Director, regular training and a 24-7 mindset. As a result, Lewis’ commitment to safety is recognized year after year. Safety Director, Andrew Yeager, said, “At Lewis Contractors, safety is top priority, which is why Lewis leads its industry in providing work environments that are, at all times, safe and healthy.”
