Lewis Contractors Breaks Ground for Mercy High School “Leveling the Playing Field” Program

March 4, 2019 – Four inches of snow, combined with sleet and freezing rain the day before, did not deter Mercy High School President Mary Beth Lennon’s plans to break ground for the school’s new state of the art artificial turf playing field on Thursday, February 21. Lewis Contractors is the Construction Manager for this new home to “Mercy Magic”. The day of the groundbreaking ceremony did not disappoint with its moderate temperatures, gleaming sun, light breezes and the total disappearance of the snow from the day before.

The new multi-purpose field will host baseball and soccer games and, for the first time, allow the Magic teams to practice outside and play onsite regardless of weather. Once completed, Mercy will no longer have to schedule games on its brother school, Calvert Hall College’s, fields. New bleacher seating will provide comfortable accommodations for fans and a full refreshment stand is planned.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Lennon shared with the gathered audience that the new field is “transformational and ambitious” and that her Magic athletic program continues to be “vibrant and competitive.” Magic Nation—as the alumnae, students, faculty and parents call themselves—joined Ms. Lennon in celebrating the “Sisters of Mercy Field”. Students holding placards revealed the name of the field and the Sisters in attendance were celebrated by standing in front of the students once the name was announced.

Nick Gill, Mercy High School Athletic Director, stated, “Mercy has always provided an exceptional education for girls. When this effort is completed, Mercy will provide the premier playing surface our girls deserve. This field… will truly set Mercy apart.”

The new field is scheduled for completion in time for the commencement of the Fall 2019 school calendar.
