May 4, 2017 – Construction begins on Baltimore County Public School’s new $31M Lansdowne Elementary School.
In order to alleviate overcrowding in southwestern Baltimore County public schools, a new 700-seat replacement facility will be built next to the current school which was originally built in 1965.
Lewis Contractors is the general contractor for the new two-story 96,000-square-foot school that is set to open for the 2018-2019 school year.
The Pre-K through 5th grade school will feature over 40 classrooms, a gymnasium, multimedia center, cafeteria and innovations in curriculum delivery such as outdoor environmental learning areas, flexible spaces for collaboration, areas for hands-on learning and the latest technology to permit learning opportunities throughout the entire school.
Designed by Grimm + Parker, the building will be built to LEED Silver standards and incorporate sustainable design elements such as recycled and regional materials, a green roof, photovoltaic panels and a geothermal heat pump system.
Following construction, the second phase of work will involve demolishing the existing school and constructing athletic fields on the site which will be available for use in fall 2019.
In 2015, Lewis completed Baltimore County Public Schools’ Catonsville Elementary School project which was a fast track, award winning $24M renovation/addition to the existing school on Bloomsbury Avenue.
