October 18, 2018 – Sheppard Pratt Health System has awarded the contract for its new hospital campus in Howard County to Lewis Contractors. This project represents the fourth time the two organizations have worked together on a capital project—most notably, the award-winning restoration to Sheppard Pratt’s historic Gatehouse.
Planned as a 12-acre improvement to Sheppard Pratt’s 40-acre Elkridge site, the new hospital will be the first building on the behavioral health campus serving the needs of patients seeking mental health and addiction services throughout the capital region and beyond. The new three-story, 156,000 SF building will include 85 in-patient beds, partial hospital programs and crisis services. It will replace and enhance services of Sheppard Pratt’s current Ellicott City location to create a continuum of services similar to its flagship hospital in Towson.
Programs will be included for ages across the lifespan. The building will also feature outdoor courtyards and terraces, a gymnasium and other features allowing for both internal and external space to support a therapeutic environment.
The new building is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards or better. It will include state-of-the-art equipment, programs and materials specific to a behavioral health hospital. Additionally, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) program used throughout the project will fully document the new hospital to ensure efficient and proactive maintenance for decades to come.
Original Sheppard Pratt benefactor Moses Sheppard, asserted that Sheppard Pratt “do everything for the comfort of the patient” and “meet a need that otherwise would not be met”. Lewis Contractors is honored to be chosen as the construction manager who will ensure Sheppard’s founding tenets will be met by this newest addition to behavioral health care in Maryland.
