Towson University’s New Public Safety Building Receives LEED Silver Certification

January 8, 2014 – Towson University’s Public Safety Building receives LEED Silver Certification.  Lewis Contractors served as construction manager for the facility which was constructed in the spring of 2012. The project involved the construction of a new 20,270 SF building to support the current and projected facility needs of the University’s Office of Public Safety—the new, two-story structure provided expansion space for facilities management, departmental offices, additional parking facilities, and access roads.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a comprehensive and flexible green building tool that addresses the entire building lifecycle recognizing best-in-class building strategies. The program provides third-party verification of green buildings through a system in which building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.

In order to achieve the LEED Silver Certification goal that was set, the Lewis team created a “Waste Management Plan” that resulted in the project diverting 85% of the on-site generated construction waste from landfill. Additionally, Lewis tracked Recycled Content of materials being used to construct the Towson Public Safety Building, and amazingly, one third of the total building materials’ contents, by value, have been manufactured using recycled materials. Additional Regional LEED points were earned for 38% of the total building materials value including products that have been manufactured and extracted within 500 miles of the project site. Other green prerequisites achieved included the implementation of an “Indoor Air Quality Management Plan” and performing a flush-out prior to occupancy by supplying a total air volume of 14,000 cubic feet of outdoor air per square foot of floor area while maintaining an internal temperature of at least 60 degrees F and relative humidity no higher than 60% and the sole use of green compliant adhesives and sealants.

Lewis Contractors is continually building a healthier environment for the people of Baltimore to live, work and play.  With 3 LEED-Accredited Professionals, 2 Green Associates, and significant body of work that has been certified—or is in the process of being certified—by the USGBC, the Lewis Team is ready to help reduce a building’s environmental impact, while enhancing its long term affordability, quality, and efficiency.
