“The care taken by Lewis Contractors—their project manager, superintendent and assistant superintendents – to hold to the intent of the contract documents is commendable, and the craftsmanship and workmanship they demanded and received from the subcontractors on this project was truly appreciated.” - David R. McCracken, Retired Senior Project Manager, Construction Services, Towson University

Award winning construction management and general contracting since 1966.

At Lewis, we love to build. It’s what we do. For over 50 years, our passion for building has Lewis Contractors engaged in myriad academic, institutional, restoration, industrial, and commercial projects. Delivering a tradition of excellence, innovative thinking, and attention to detail to each and every project, Lewis brings value to its partnerships by applying its half-century of knowledge and expertise from the design phase to the ribbon-cutting and beyond.

Having worked with some of the region’s most respected institutions, Lewis has created a robust portfolio of high-profile projects and has flourished over the years by enjoying the greatest compliment its clients could bestow repeat business.

What else sets us apart?

  • We are family-owned and operated.
  • We are a responsive, mid-sized firm that gives all the services of a large construction management firm.
  • We offer the same menu of services, with the same range of resources—all backed by our reputation for exemplary service and performance.
  • We are not a national firm. We live in Maryland, we work in Maryland, and we are fully invested in our Maryland communities.
  • We have strong relationships with all sectors of the industry. Through integrity of action, we have forged strong, repeat relationships with owners, owners’ representatives, designers, subcontractors and suppliersthroughout Maryland. Craftsmen throughout the state are familiar with our excellent reputation, and they are eager to do their best work for us.
  • Our project managers have long tenures. As a firm, we have a wealth of institutional knowledge. Our project managers each have, on average, 15 or more years of experience in the building trades managing projects.
  • Company-wide average tenure is 15 years for our nearly 60 associates.
  • All of our project managers are estimators in their own right. They typically estimate their own projects and manage each project from preconstruction through construction, until the close of the project, lending continuity to a project, and providing an owner with one point of contact throughout project delivery.
  • Our project superintendents and field personnel are craftsmen who have been exposed to a variety of projects and conditions. They know how to solve problems quickly and effectively.
  • Our self-performance capability provides greater flexibility in the completion of building forensic examination, select demolition, rough and finish carpentry, concrete work, installation of miscellaneous items, specialty work, and general conditions labor. We regularly leverage our relationships with sister companies Stewart & Tate, Inc. and Riley Welding & Fabricating, opening the door to self-performance capabilities in the fields of sitework, rigging, millwrighting, large and complex concrete foundations, and custom and specialty metal fabrication.
  • The majority of our portfolio is repeat business. We are often called upon to expand on our projects and take them into the next stage or phase of the owner’s vision. Lewis approaches every project as a
relationship to be nurtured and returned to as our services are needed. And because of our workforce’s extraordinary length of service, we are often able to assign the same people who were originally attached to the project. Repeat clients include the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland—Baltimore, McDaniel College, Towson University, Howard Community College, the Johns Hopkins Health System, Lifebridge Health, Sheppard Pratt Health Systems, the Gilman School, Friends School of Baltimore, the Beth Tfiloh Congregation and Schools, the Boys Latin School, and many others.
  • We are on the forefront of the new technologies that are revolutionizing construction. These technologies include Building Information Modeling (BIM)–a series of innovative 3D visualization programs that identify and help circumvent potential problems early in the construction process, as well as the extensive use of Mobile Management Software in the field. On many of its projects, Lewis employs digital tablets such as iPads, each equipped with specialized, cloud-based software that permits users to access document libraries, conduct QA/QC, safety, and commissioning checklists, and monitor and track issues or questions that may arise in the field. Together, these technologies provide real and tangible benefits, dramatically improving communication among project stakeholders, enhancing overall coordination and project management, and streamlining the construction processes.

“Lewis actively worked to coordinate the additional work and incorporate it into the current sequence of construction with minimal impact. Lewis' ability to accommodate these and other additional scope items while meeting the completion date and providing work of the highest quality secured the success of the project.” - Mark M. Schneidman, Maryland School for the Deaf—Hessian Barracks

Founded in Owings Mills, MD, Lewis has kept its focus on serving the greater Maryland marketplace. Our employees call this beautiful area home, and we do our best to hire and partner with companies and sub-contractors from the area. We are committed to the growth of Maryland in general, and the Baltimore region specifically.

That’s why you’ll see our other investments in the community such as…

“These facilities constructed by Lewis have drawn national and international attention…visitors have reported that they had never seen such quality in construction, uniqueness in design, and functionality benefits for the students.”” - Dr. Michael Bina, President, Maryland School for the Blind

When Henry H. Lewis founded his construction company in 1966, he adhered to three basic principles: i) integrity—be honest, truthful, and fair with customers and subcontractors alike; ii) quality—leave behind successful projects that are nothing short of ‘world class’; and iii) client advocacy—starting in preconstruction, leave no stone unturned in maximizing value, leveraging experience, and minimizing headaches for the customer. In the ensuing decades, Henry built a successful business and a golden reputation based on these three principles. They are the very same principles we live by today.

Lewis Contractors has flourished over the years by enjoying the greatest compliment its clients could bestow: repeat business. By focusing on Metropolitan Baltimore’s most venerable institutions—private schools, colleges, churches and medical care facilities—we have developed a vast knowledge of building issues, a proven ability to stage and phase construction in and around occupied buildings and sites, and experience working with committees.

We draw upon our history and experience as we continue to embrace positive change in the construction industry. Starting in the late 1980s, we began to perform CM-at-Risk projects. Moving with industry developments, we compete for an increasing number of construction management contracts each year. CM-at-Risk projects now encompass a majority of our workload. Through these experiences, we have developed a reputation as a proactive construction manager who thinks ahead. Today, institutional and academic projects comprise approximately three-quarters of our total work volume, with projects ranging in size from tens of thousands to tens of millions of dollars.

Our long-standing reputation within the industry across many segments has equipped us with a wealth of experience, as well as a large following of trusted and skilled subcontractors to draw upon within the Baltimore region.
