The Maryland School For The Blind Gymnasium, Pool Building And Outdoor Pavilion (Under Construction)

Established in 1853, The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) stands as a beacon of inclusive education, providing essential services to visually impaired, autistic, and disabled students across all twenty-four Maryland counties. As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence and accessibility, MSB embarks on a transformative journey to enhance their campus infrastructure, ensuring it aligns with the evolving needs of our diverse student body. This project encompasses the phased construction of a new gymnasium and pool complex, along with a detached restroom pavilion, heralding a new era in athletic and recreational facilities at MSB. This endeavor includes the demolition of existing structures to make way for state-of-the-art amenities that foster inclusivity, accessibility, and holistic development.

For the 53,500 SF combined gymnasium and pool building, the innovative hybrid structure integrates prefabricated, pre-engineered, and site-built elements. It will house essential facilities such as a heated competition pool with four lap lanes, ramped entry lanes, and dedicated lift, accompanied by bleachers for spectator seating. It will include a heated sensory pool designed for therapeutic purposes, offering a nurturing environment for students’ physical and emotional well-being. Included in the design is ample storage spaces, locker rooms, staff offices, and mechanical rooms to support seamless operations. The gymnasium will be versatile and equipped for high school sports, complete with bleachers, storage areas, a stage, AV/IT rooms, classrooms, fitness room, reception desk, medical office, and security stations.

Also included in the project is a 1,600 SF detached restroom pavilion that features men’s and women’s restrooms, a family restroom equipped with an adult changing table, catering to the diverse needs of students and visitors, storage facilities and mechanical rooms to ensure efficient management of resources. The project encompasses vital site development and utility enhancements, including stormwater management, parking facilities, outdoor fitness areas, and the installation of an emergency generator to uphold campus safety and functionality.

By providing state-of-the-art athletic and recreational facilities, MSB will foster holistic development and promote active lifestyles among students of all abilities. The design prioritizes universal access, ensuring that every student, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges, can fully participate in athletic and wellness activities. The new facilities will serve as a hub for social interaction, community events, and inclusive programming, strengthening bonds among students, staff, and families.
