Community College of Baltimore County | Wellness and Athletics Center

The hub of campus wellbeing and fitness, The Wellness and Athletics Center at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), underwent major renovations to upgrade and expand the facilities. The Center, built in 1972, had reached its limits for supporting the expanding wellness and athletics programs being offered by CCBC Essex, such as strength training, cardio fitness and yoga. Lewis Contractors was chosen as the Construction Manager at Risk to guide the process of renewing the out-dated building into a state-of-the-art facility.

The project included construction of an 8,000 SF addition for a new fitness center for strength and conditioning programs and renovation of approximately 6,500 SF on the existing mezzanine level to create offices and two large dance studios with changing space. Additionally, renovations to another 7,000 SF on the main level updated the lobby, corridors, and athletic program support spaces. Additional program elements include new areas for administration and facility operations.

Modifications in the facility extended beyond expanding and renovating to create new spaces. Upgrades to existing systems such as HVAC, plumbing, AV, and lighting were also included. Modernization of the Life Safety Systems was undertaken and included installation of a new state-of -the art sprinkler system in the facility’s large dome. This project ensured the renovated facility met all ADA requirements. Finally, exterior repairs to such areas as masonry, windows, and the roof were completed.

The vastly improved and expanded Wellness and Athletics Center will support the educational and recreational needs of CCBC Essex students for years to come.
