Notre Dame of Maryland University | Knott Science & Innovation Center Renovation

Founded in 1873, Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) is the oldest Catholic women’s college. Challenged by the competition for students of small co-educational institutions, and by the need to strengthen its programs, especially in the sciences, the University commissioned a master plan to help guide its physical growth in its second century. Part of this expansion was an addition to the Knott Science Center, completed in 1999. This new wing provided additional state-of-the-art laboratories, support space, classrooms, and offices, as well as a new entrance to the building. The original four-story Knott Science Center, completed in 1967 and known as “Old Knott”, expanded with the addition, known as “New Knott”, provided an additional 40,000 square feet of space.

The current renovation completed by Lewis mostly encompassed “Old Knott” with nominal changes to the “New Knott” interior and infrastructure. This $9 million renovation created innovative learning and collaborative spaces to enhance student learning and success in STEM. The enhancement to the instructional spaces supports the needs of 21st century STEM students and promotes a project-based, experiential approach to teaching and learning. The objective of this project was to encourage increased interest in science and create spaces that allow for flexible teaching methodologies and state-of-the-art technology.

So as to achieve this goal, the renovation created glass-walled classrooms and labs to display science in action, specialized research laboratories, instructional spaces for student-faculty collaboration, and flexible group learning spaces. Renovations included the reconfiguration of space, removal and replacement of existing finish materials, and the replacement of doors, windows, laboratory casework, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment. Additional work included the reconfiguration of systems including, but not limited to, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection and technology.
