Church of the Resurrection | Addition & Renovation
Lewis Contractors served as Construction Manager for the Church of the Resurrection for the phased, two-story expansion project. This new 22,000 SF addition houses a sanctuary with seating for over 350 parishioners, a choir loft capable of seating a choir of more than 50 members, gathering space, a servery, classrooms, and a second story with offices, library, meeting spaces, a new learning space was added for educational purposes.
The addition abuts the existing church sanctuary/classroom structure and features lofty sanctuary ceilings with an exposed custom-made truss system with pre-finished timber trusses—each spanning an impressive 34 feet in length and affixed to structural steel framing—and serve as the most prominent architectural feature of the space. The addition also includes arched windows, a radiant flooring system, and a new easy access entry on Greenspring Avenue. The exterior of the building includes a traditional masonry facade laid in a Flemish Bond pattern, Butler Stone base, and pre-cast details similar to many other colonial style worship facilities. Located directly behind the sanctuary chancel is a small chapel—a multi-use community space with a dedicated exterior entry intended for use for small services. Final phases of the project included an interior renovation of the existing sanctuary for meeting and classroom programs and exterior modifications to the existing playground, courtyard, outdoor activity space, parking, and a 20,000 gallon underground fire suppression storage tank and fire pump system. Throughout construction the church was occupied, fully operational, and required shared usage of the site’s main access roads.
