The Maryland School for the Blind | Multiple Disabilities Blind New Academic Building & Cottage
This multi-year campus improvement project involved the construction of a new Academic Building and a new residential Cottage on The Maryland School for the Blind Campus. The Academic Building is a 22,500 SF classroom structure and a two-story 5,000 SF cottage. The Academic Building contains space for approximately 60 students and includes 12 areas where students work on independent living skills development. These areas provide space for ease of movement for multiple wheelchairs and other physical therapy equipment. Additional spaces house offices and staff lounges. The cottage contains six double occupancy bedrooms with accessible bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a private area for staff quarters. Students in the LIFE program are blind and/or visually impaired and have other severe and profound disabilities making construction safety throughout campus a paramount concern on this project.
