Notre Dame of Maryland University Knott Science & Innovation Center Renovation
The Notre Dame of Maryland University Knott Science & Innovation Center Renovation was undertaken to modernize a legacy academic facility while supporting evolving STEM curricula within an active campus environment. Lewis Contractors was selected to renovate the original 1967 wing of the Knott Science Center (“Old Knott”), with selective improvements to the adjoining 1999 expansion (“New Knott”), which remained partially occupied throughout construction. The work required careful phasing, sequencing, and coordination to maintain safe academic operations while integrating new systems into existing infrastructure.
The renovation reconfigured nearly all interior spaces to support programs in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Psychology, and Criminology/Sociology. New lecture halls, flexible classrooms, faculty offices, specialized research laboratories, and student‑faculty collaboration areas were created to support project‑based, experiential learning. Several instructional spaces were designed with movable partitions, allowing classrooms to expand or contract based on academic needs. Glass‑walled labs and teaching spaces were introduced to increase visibility and reinforce science in action.
From a construction standpoint, the project required full replacement of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and technology systems within an existing structure—while coordinating tie‑ins to systems in the occupied New Knott wing. One of the most complex challenges involved adapting legacy Vulcathene acid waste piping, a discontinued metric‑based system, to modern polypropylene infrastructure. Lewis Contractors sourced specialty couplings and executed custom integration solutions to ensure compatibility, safety, and long‑term performance.
The project also included installation of a comprehensive Crestron audiovisual system integrating touch controls, projection, sound, and movable screens. Long equipment lead times required early rough‑in coordination and precise execution well in advance of delivery. Pandemic‑related supply chain disruptions further complicated mechanical equipment procurement, requiring flexibility and close collaboration with trades, the University, and the project architect.
Completed within an occupied academic setting, the Notre Dame of Maryland University Knott Science & Innovation Center Renovation delivers a modern, flexible STEM learning environment and reflects Lewis Contractors’ experience executing technically complex renovations in higher‑education facilities.
