Gilman School | Kindergarten Addition
This project consists of a Kindergarten Addition to the existing Gilman Lower School building. The addition includes two classrooms, a multipurpose room, and new office and storage space—approximately 8,600 SF of new construction. The building’s structure consisted of brick on metal stud with slate roofing. The use of windows along the building elevation was maximized in the design, providing light and airy spaces within the structure. High-end educational finishes were provided throughout, with color selections chosen from a bright and vivid palette that was reflective of the spirit and energy that the Design Team wished to infuse into the learning environment. Work also includes a new courtyard and playground.
The project site was a very tight area bounded by Roland Avenue, Northern Parkway, and the Existing Lower School. The staging area was limited to a few parking spaces near the intersection. Once the addition’s walls were constructed, only a very narrow access path around the site was available—the site was only 18 feet wide at its narrowest point. The existing Lower School was fully operational during construction, requiring special safety considerations and frequent owner coordination.
