Mercy High School | Auditorium Addition

Mercy High School Auditorium construction required careful coordination to deliver a major performing arts addition at an occupied Archdiocese of Baltimore girls’ high school. Lewis Contractors served as Construction Manager for the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium, a ground-up expansion designed to enhance the school’s academic and performing arts programs.

Designed by Gant Hart Brunnett Architects (now part of RRMM Architects), the project introduced a 37,000 SF addition anchored by a 660-seat auditorium equipped with advanced sound and lighting systems. The facility also includes a renovated dance studio, choir room, classrooms, a scene shop, and supporting theatrical spaces—all designed to accommodate a wide range of performances, academic instruction, and school gatherings.

Executing the Mercy High School Auditorium project on an occupied campus required detailed planning and sequencing to maintain safe, uninterrupted academic operations. Construction activities were carefully coordinated around daily school functions, with clear separation between student circulation paths and active work zones. Deliveries, staging, and site access were tightly managed to minimize disruption while maintaining an efficient construction workflow.

A key component of the project’s success was Lewis Contractors’ leadership during preconstruction. Working collaboratively with the owner and design team, Lewis Contractors identified more than $2 million in value engineering opportunities. These solutions focused on optimizing materials, systems, and construction methods while preserving the architectural intent and performance requirements of the facility. This proactive, open-book approach allowed the project team to maintain budget alignment without compromising quality, functionality, or aesthetics.

From a technical standpoint, the auditorium required precise coordination of structural systems, acoustical considerations, and theatrical infrastructure. Integration of lighting, sound, and stage support systems demanded close collaboration between trades to ensure performance requirements were met and systems operated seamlessly within the finished space.

The completed facility provides a dedicated home for performing arts at Mercy High School, supporting plays, concerts, liturgies, and community events. Lewis Contractors delivered a high-functioning, purpose-built environment that enhances student experience while reflecting the school’s long-term vision. The project was recognized with ABC Baltimore’s Excellence in Construction Award, reinforcing its success in both execution and outcome.
