The Maryland School for the Blind
The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) campus construction by Lewis Contractors reflects a long‑term, multi‑project partnership focused on expanding, modernizing, and restoring a highly specialized educational environment. Across new construction, historic renovations, and outdoor athletic amenities, Lewis Contractors has supported the School’s mission to provide safe, accessible, and inclusive learning and residential spaces for students who are blind or have multiple disabilities.
Lewis Contractors’ work at MSB includes the Bledsoe Residential Cottages, along with the Autism‑Blind New Classroom & Cottages and the Multiple Disabilities Blind New Academic Building & Cottage, each designed to support varying educational and residential needs. These projects required close coordination around sensory‑appropriate materials, lighting control, acoustics, durability, and predictable circulation—critical considerations within a special‑education campus.
The firm also delivered the Preschool, Early Learning and Outreach Center Addition & Renovation, expanding MSB’s early childhood and family‑focused programs while carefully sequencing construction adjacent to active learning spaces. Historic preservation played a central role in the Newcomer, Case, and Campbell Halls Restoration, where Lewis Contractors integrated modern building systems, accessibility upgrades, and energy‑efficient improvements while preserving the character of existing campus buildings.
Campus amenities were further expanded through the new Beep Baseball Field & Track Loop, completed in partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. This project introduced inclusive athletic facilities designed specifically for visually impaired athletes, requiring careful attention to grading, safety features, and campus logistics.
Currently under construction, the Gymnasium, Pool Building, and Outdoor Pavilion represents the next phase of Lewis Contractors’ work at MSB. This project adds new recreational and wellness spaces while requiring complex coordination within an active campus, including utility integration, safety planning, and construction sequencing aligned with school operations.
Across all projects, Lewis Contractors has worked closely with MSB leadership, architects, and specialty consultants to align construction activities with academic calendars and residential needs. Together, these efforts form a cohesive, campus‑wide investment that strengthens educational, residential, recreational, and outdoor environments at The Maryland School for the Blind.
