Johns Hopkins University | Applied Physics Laboratory Building Chiller Replacement
This project involved the replacement of two chillers that served a fully operational—and mission critical—data center. Chillers were set up in an N + 1 arrangement so as to always have a backup chiller available. Project included a temporary chiller provided by the Owner during the project to allow the N + 1 arrangement to be maintained. The replacement of the two chillers were completed in a phased manner to maintain N + 1 arrangement at all times throughout the project. Start up and testing and commissioning of units was carefully monitored and coordinated to ensure the data center was not jeopardized in any way. The project included new welded refrigerant piping and new electrical feeders. This project also required the close coordination and use of cranes to hoist the chillers over the secure perimeter fencing.
